Fingerstyle Arrangements For Bob Dylan Classics

Level 2/3

Happy Traum’s long association with Bob Dylan, as well as his decades-long experience as one of America’s best-known guitar instructors, makes him the perfect person to teach fingerstyle arrangements from some classics of the Dylan canon. In this workshop, Happy teaches intermediate-level guitarists how to make their own arrangements and create interesting accompaniments for a number of Dylan perennials.

Happy helps you bring your arrangements to life with movable chord shapes, bass runs, harmony lines and other nuances that will add distinction to every song you play. Each piece features a different fingerpicking approach: Traditional three-finger patterns, Travis-style swing, steady-bass blues, Carter Family strumming, and more. The idea is to use these songs to help make you a better all-around fingerstyle player.

For those who have taken Happy’s Dylan class before, there will be new arrangements of songs taken from Bob’s huge output, including (but not limited to) “Tangled Up in Blue,” “I Want You,” “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” and “Love Minus Zero No Limits,” along with other classics such as “Don’t Think Twice” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.” The class is open to players who know the basic chords and have a little picking experience. Happy will also reveal some tales from his early friendship with Bob in Greenwich Village and Woodstock, NY.

Blues and Traditional Fingerpicking Styles and Techniques

Level 3

Happy will teach material from his vast repertoire of traditional folk, blues and country songs, with one or two contemporary ones (including a couple of great arrangements of Dylan songs) thrown in. There will be some “monotonic bass” technique he learned personally from blues great Brownie McGhee and alternate-thumb songs in the style of Mississippi John Hurt. You’ll learn how to incorporate bass runs, chord substitutions, double-stop harmonies, blues improvisation and other essential musical devices into your repertoire for a more exciting, professional sound. This will be a rich and wide-ranging series of classes. Prerequisites: You should already be adept at basic chord changes and comfortable with the fingerpicking style.

**This weekend is double occupancy lodging.
