Simple But Not Easy

Level 3

In this course, Chris Smither will demonstrate how, over time, he developed his own signature guitar style. He will talk about the influence that Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt had on his music. Chris will also discuss his approach to songwriting and also the interconnected relationship of writing the lyrics and the music. He will work with each student guiding each one as they approach their own guitar playing and songwriting.

Let Your Guitar Be Your Voice

Level 3

The two major influences on Chris Smither’s guitar style were Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt. This workshop will demonstrate how he has combined aspects of their playing to form his own style. The goal is to show students how to make a guitar arrangement that is an integral part of a song, as opposed to mere accompaniment; how to use these techniques as a stimulus to song-writing in which the guitar part becomes the song instead of an after-the-fact embellishment.

About Chris Smither

Blues-folk icon Chris Smither has long been revered for both his guitar prowess and his way with a lyric, inspiring artists from Bonnie Raitt and John Mayall to Emmylou Harris and Diana Krall. From Boston Music Awards to five-star reviews in Mojo magazine and earning a spot on Rolling Stone Senior Editor David Fricke’s Personal Top 10 list of best New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival performances in 2014, Chris continues to earn accolades for his music. His songs have appeared in various films and TV shows and have been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Diana Krall, among others. Chris continues to tour festivals, music clubs and concerts halls in North America, Europe and Australia; 2015 included stops at the legendary Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK and Tonder Festival in Denmark, and the annual John Lennon Tribute concert at Symphony Space in New York.

As Smither marked his 50th year of music-making in 2014, the New Orleans-raised troubadour looked back at his career with STILL ON THE LEVEE, a two-CD retrospective from Signature Sounds. He also released his full lyric collection as a book titled CHRIS SMITHER LYRICS 1966-2012, and in September, Signature Sounds saluted him with LINK OF CHAIN, a tribute album featuring contributions by our very own Jorma Kaukonen, Bonnie Raitt, Loudon Wainwright III, Dave Alvin, Patty Larkin, Josh Ritter, Peter Case, Tim O’Brien and many other friends and admirers from the music world.
